Update from Care Home Support Groups

Invernevis House Action Group

The Invernevis House Action Group continue to oppose Highland Council’s proposed sell off/privatisation of Invernevis House and have received massive public support in their campaign.  This was most evident when a high powered group of councillors and officials, including the Convenor and Chief Executive, were shamed into calling a public meeting at Caol on 27th November, 2006.  The Chair Person on the night admitted that this was not a meeting to obtain the views of the public (which had been requested over the past 9 months), but to appraise them on the events achieved so far leading to privatisation.

The Convener and Chief Executive were obviously somewhat taken aback on the hostile reception to their proposals portrayed by the many anti–views from the floor, followed by a cold silence after their and Councillor Foxley’s presentations.

In sharp contrast and to loud applause, Councillor Brian Murphy and John Morrison presented a very strong and popular case for retaining Invernevis House in the public sector, accusing Highland Council of calling this meeting at short notice and in direct response to a general letter of complaint on the matter.  They also accused the Council of mal-administration and lack of democracy throughout this project.  The council’s proposals were unanimously rejected by a vote taken from the some 200 folk present.

Our group are most appreciative of the support of Highland Senior Citizens Network in their efforts to retain the status quo in the threatened homes.  Public opinion is very much against the official led council proposals and we will continue to campaign in the new year.
